Grasslands is a Southern California premier bluegrass band. Made up of 5 multi-talented veterans of music. They are the best of friends, and it shows the minute they step onto the stage. Enjoying not only entertaining the audience, but enjoying playing the music with each other.
Members in the group have toured throughout the United States and overseas. Performing at amusement parks, on folk radio programs, worked as musical accompaniment for theater, television commercials, and bluegrass festivals. Grasslands Bluegrass Band has performed at the Grass Valley, Huck Finn Jubilee, Route 66 Bluegrass and Parkfield festivals and venues like McCabe’s Guitar Shop. The featured band for the Los Angeles and San Diego bluegrass clubs, Southwest Bluegrass Association Showcase band and KSON live Radio.
Grasslands has an eclectic repertoire that covers a wide variety of music. And takes inspiration from traditional Bluegrass, Swing, Country, Western, and Rock-N-Roll classics all performed in a bluegrass fashion. This always brings their performance-level style of entertainment to a diverse and enthusiastic audiences.

JIM COOPER – GUITAR & VOCALS
Jim has been playing and singing for over 30 years. His ability to remember chords to a thousand tunes and songs is amazing. His lead singing is warm and he adds depth to others with his versatile vocal harmonies. He has been in bluegrass bands for more than 30 years, including Southland Express, Cheesy Tortellini’s, High Cotton, and the original Grasslands, which was the house band at the old Banjo Café in Santa Monica. A fixture at jams everywhere, Jim is happy to be playing in Grasslands, made up of old and new friends.
SHELAH SPIEGEL – FIDDLE & VOCALS
Shelah is a 4-time Southern California fiddle champ and 17 year head fiddle judge at the Topanga Banjo/Fiddle contest. She sang in commercials and worked as a musician at Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain and toured in Japan with Knott’s. She has played in several bands, such as Dick Tyner & Train 45, Gold Coast (who opened for groups like Nickel Creek), and played in the Phoenix, Arizona band, Shady Creek, which was a finalist bluegrass band in 1998 for the Pizza Hut International Bluegrass Showdown in Louisville, Kentucky (IBMA). Shelah also teaches fiddle and specializes in beginning adults.
FRED WADE – ELECTRIC BASS
Fred has been part of the bluegrass scene in Southern California for over 25 years, playing on stages from Kentucky through the Western U.S. His first band was The Buffalo Brewing Company, playing a mix of country and bluegrass. He discovered that bluegrass was played at more pleasant venues than smoky old bars. His list of local bands includes Pickit Line, The Jamie Olsen Band, The Cheesy Tortillini’s, Free Wheelin’, Faultline, and The Silverado Bluegrass Band. He’s the guy everybody calls because his playing is solid and tasteful. Fred is pleased to be picking with old friends in Grasslands – Southern California Bluegrass.
DAVE RICHARDSON – BANJO & VOCALS
Dave was born in Jefferson County in Appalachian Ohio. His mother and father influenced his music and allowed him to pursue his dreams. He recorded his first record at Ripon College in Wisconsin with The Other Half. Dave moved to Hawaii and worked on the Don Ho Show for five years playing nightly and on the daily ABC television series. He has performed or recorded with Jerry Byrd, Glen Campbell, Jimmy Martin, Chris Hillman, Dennis Caplinger, Kenny Rogers, Mel Tillis, and many others. Dave lives in San Gabriel, California where he operates his video and audio conservancy to help aspiring artists.
TIM O’BRIEN – DOBRO & VOCALS
Tim has navigated the Southern California bluegrass scene for over 20 years as a talented guitar, banjo and Dobro player and lead singer. He was a member the Rank Strangers, the Witcher Brothers (in which he contributed on two recordings), Blue Plate Special, who won Best Band at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Festival, Cheesy Tortellini’s and Free Wheelin’. Tim cut his teeth learning fiddle tunes and being exposed to traditional bluegrass. His vocal influences come from singers such as Tony Rice and Ronnie Bowman and bands such as Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Lonesome River Band, Hot Rize, and Blue Highway.
